Fishing halibut in Alaska on the FV Northern Lights

Alaska halibut fishing in Homer

Captain Mark and the Northern Lights is usually the first out of the Homer harbor at 0600 to head for the days fishing grounds. On the way out you can enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast while you talk with Captain Mark, the crew and the other Alaska fishing enthusiasts aboard and watch the rest of the sport fishing charter captains try to catch up to Captain Mark and figure out where the Northern Lights will drop her lines first. On the way you will see the rugged coastline of the Kenai Peninsula and the many marine animals that inhabit Kachemak Bay and Cook Inlet. Seeing whales, sea otters, orcas, sea lions and countless Alaska sea birds are only part of your Alaska fishing experience aboard the Northern Lights. Dont forget that the crew will also clean and fillet your days catch at no additional charge.

When you arrive at the fishing grounds chosen by your captain, you will find that the crew has everything ready to begin fishing as soon as the boat stops moving. Your fishing charter includes high quality fishing rods and reels as well as high quality baits such as octopus, salmon belly and herring. If you are an experienced fisherman you may want to try your angling skills with a jig, but be sure to hold on to your rod as you can get some pretty hard hits without warning that will pull a rod right out of your hands when a halibut strikes.

The typical day fishing charter on the Northern Lights will last about 10 hours. While you are provided with a complimentary breakfast consisting of juice, coffee, and pastries by Captain Mark and his crew, you will probably want to bring along a lunch and something to drink for later in the day or on the ride back to Homer harbor. Captain Mark also suggests that in addition to a lunch and drinks that you include a camera, foul weather gear, an Alaska sport fishing license(if you are over 16 years old) and a Homer halibut derby ticket. We have had clients who left more than $30,000 on the proverbial table when they caught derby winning fish on the Northern Lights and did not have a Homer halibut derby ticket.
